Misconceptions Of African American Life Essays -

Misguided judgments Of African American Life At the point when you control a man's reasoning you don't need to stress over his activities. You don't need to instruct him not to remain here or go there. He will locate his legitimate spot and will remain in it. You don't have to send him to the indirect access. He will abandon being told. Truth be told, if there is no indirect access, he will cut one for his uncommon advantage. His instruction makes it vital. This statement, verbally expressed valid by an unmistakable African American researcher of the twentieth century, Carson Woodson, is planned for revealing insight into the natural miseducation of African Americans. His convictions that controlling ones deduction with such an amazing handle, that permits almost no development will prompt that individual carrying on as he is normal is a truly reasonable point. On the off chance that over and over, one is advised to do certain things or accept certain things as right, at that point with consistent reiteration and implementation, broad conviction and acknowledgment of this thought or practice will turn into the standard. A people that is reliably instructed or rewarded a specific route may eventually start to acknowledge it right. Nonetheless, much of the time what might be esteemed right by some isn't really the best activity. This hypothesis can not be any more conspicuous than on account of African Americans, who have since a long tim e ago persevered through many long stretches of prejudicial practices dependent on upon their race and starting points. Going back to the times of servitude, these are a people that out of partiality, out of desires, out of dread, have frequently come to see the white keeps an eye on route as the correct path either by decision or by having no other decision. All the while, be that as it may, their own one of a kind culture, excellence, convictions, customs, and so on., regularly get stomped on upon or even overlooked as they either battle to keep up or battle to keep awake. All the more then not, however, this indoctrinating of sorts brings about a miseducation of the African-American individuals that frequently prompts across the board mistaken assumptions about them. These mistaken assumptions would then be able to prompt different types of generalizations pointed against African-Americans by whites or other non African Americans got en route because of fragmented information abo ut their history which innately likewise hurt those creation these bogus suppositions. Times are evolving, in any case, and with these developmental years comes a more prominent feeling of battle to comprehend. This battle comes both from inside the African-American people group to discover progressively about themselves sans Caucasian suggestions, and furthermore from gatherings, for example, whites to endeavor to assign generalizations from facts. By far most of helps in this procedure, be that as it may, originate from African American researchers, journalists, writers, producers, and so on., who have embarked to uncover the miseducation of the Negro into accepting and following up on constrained activities or feelings and to become familiar with the realities behind their real legacy. Four works that susinctly realize the miseducation African American history into the spotlight of the national open are Claude McKays The Lynching, Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of A Slavegi rl, Gordon Parks Washington D.C. Charwoman, and Spike Lees School Daze. Every one of the four works delineate an ongoing idea of the misinterpretation of African-American life by blacks themselves, just as Caucasians around them, that has been helped flawless through numerous an ages throughout the entire existence of the United States. The most punctual model that I might want to point out is Claude McKays sonnet entitled The Lynching. As I would see it, this sonnet tends to the normally held misguided judgments of the two blacks and whites against African Americans during the time of bondage in the U.S. As far as the miseducation of African Americans, the creator utilizes the line of The horrendous sin stayed still unforgiven to hint that being brought into the world dark was considered by him and other African Americans around then to be a wrongdoing or something to be embarrassed about. He accuses this African American keeps an eye on death for Fates wild impulse and not even once accuses the supremacist white guys who in all probability lynched him out of the blue, nor does he appear to communicate outrage towards them. This sonnet shows the miseducation of the Negro in that

Still, it is used by the different organizations fro analyzing their employees personality in prior of hiring to build an understanding about them with expectation of better handling them (Tananchai, 2017). This report presents a case study of an individual with a proper description of the test result. The final part of the report is contributed to the discussion of its origin, use and limitations. Summary of the Result Individual case study is represented in the following where 93 questions were placed in front of the subject. Based of the answer acquired from the subject, personality is represented by four dichotomies of the Business too that is given below. The ENFP people are those who considers everyone and everything as a part of a galactic whole. They simultaneously like to help people and wants to be admired and appreciated by everyone for the work, on both singular and humanitarian level. There are various advantages and disadvantages being an ENFP that are discussed in the following (humanmetrics.com., 2017). Advantages Curious The people who fall under this category are both open-minded and imaginative people and consider everything as a part of a big and mysterious puzzle. They enjoys stepping out of their comfort zone to go out and experience new things. Observant They are keen observers as they seek to quench their thirst of curiosity. According to ENFPs, no action is irrelevant and everything have a place in the bigger picture. Energetic and Enthusiastic These people are extreme social beings and seek to make new friends. It is due to their curiosity and the observation they do as they seek to find out new things. This helps them to become socialized and make more connection, which in turn enriches them with new information and ideas that they merge with their own and come up with something more interesting. Popular and Friendly This approach makes them friendly and popular among their friends. Their friend circle keeps on stretching due to their interesting, exciting, and approachable nature (Sanders, 2014). Disadvantages Despite of having these advantages in their personality, their personality do have some disadvantages. Poor Practical Skills Regardless of having wonderful ideas, ENFPs fails in administrations and follow through on the projects that they form in their minds. Focusing Issue These people have real focus issue where the find it difficult to fall into a routine structure and administrative tasks. Hence, they fail to keep up with the task. Overthinking Thinking a thing from different approaches is the key skill of an ENFP. They hardly considers the face value and tries to find all the aspects and motives even for a simplest matter in hand. Stress - By performing the above mentioned activity, these people easily dries up them selves by taking too much of stress. Emotional Being highly emotional is a considerable disadvantage for the people with this personality. They can likely to face emotional burst under criticism, conflict, and stressful situation, which result in counter productivity. Single result may seems to be accurate now, but can vary if the testis taken on the same subject repeatedly. Moreover, the criteria for placing one personality in these four overlapping factors can prove to be false as there are chances of misinterpreted (Jankowski, 2016). MBTI test and reliability The test was developed by Isabel Briggs and her mother Katherine Briggs. Katherines interest in the book Psychological Type written by Carl Jung was the prime reason as she was influenced by the idea. It resulted in creation of MBTI in the year 1940 with a joint venture with her daughter. The responsibility of the distribution of the tool was given to Education Testing Service in early 1957. They soon adopted this service in their library and used it as the personality of the students and the faculty. Soon after some negative responses received from the internal members of the institution, use of the tool was discontinued by ETS. Later on in 1975 Psychologist, press brought the right to sell the product (Prasad, 2016). The personality of every individual was categorized under 16 different types and they put them into four damnations. The tool categorizes the people under these 16 categories with the combination of these four dimensions (Furnham Crump, 2015). The two-letter category is the major limitation of the tool that is not efficient to provide accurate results. MBTI often shows similar results for individual with different personality, which makes unreliable. Use of the tool The tool certainly enjoys a global popularity. It is popular among the large business organizations and corporations. Many certified consultants find the tool profitable for their work Experts Comment A number of experts in various domains criticized the merits of MBTI. Mattare noticed high level of skepticism. McCrae and Costa criticized the psychometric properties of the tool in 1989 and highlighted the shortcomings of the tests. He blamed the overuse and misuse are the primary reason behind this problem (Pearson DeFrank-Cole, 2017). Similar Testing tools There are various other tools present in the market among which Big Five is a popular name. The original name of the testing tool is NEO-PI, which is a five-factor model. The academicians prefer Big Five to MBTI. On the other hand, the MBTI tool is more common among the business organization. In spite of their popularity in different sectors, both of them are mostly unreliable due to their overlapping results (indiana.edu., 2017). Conclusion The MBTI program is more of less reliable for one time use. However, multiple result might show variation in the result. Moreover, he criterions of placing one into a categories overlapping and can be misinterpreted multiple times. The result shows that the people with ENFP personality type are curious and observant. They have some disadvantages that needs to be overcome to progress in their live. However, personality is deeply embedded in a person that can hardly be modified under any circumstances. The Evolution of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Chicano Art free essay sample

A beautiful dark-skinned brunette stands before you. Her long, flowing hair beautifully frames her sweet face and demure smile. Yards of richly colored clothing adorn her tall, slender frame. Rays of sunlight appear from behind, emphasizing pure beauty. Her hands are joined together and she holds them at her chest in worship or, perhaps, in gratitude. Who is she, or rather, who do you see? Practicing Catholics all over Central and South America see a venerated patron saint. In Mexico, she is immediately recognizable as symbolic mother of a nation, ‘nuestra madre. New generations of mestizos see a symbol of all that is woman, as real and complex as their mothers, sisters, daughters, and lovers. Who you see depends on who you are, but all identify her as the Virgin of Guadalupe, perhaps the most recognizable icon to emerge out of post-conquest Americas. La Virgen of Guadalupe has evolved throughout history as a cross-cultural and multi-generational icon of virginity, femininity, purity, and maternal love. We will write a custom essay sample on The Evolution of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Chicano Art or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Her presence can be seen everywhere, on clothing, jewelry, car windows, and even on coffins. This essay charts the evolution of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Chicano art, from religious icon to feminist mascot; I examine the forms in which contemporary Mexican-American artists have adopted this image, in the tradition of the Chicano art movement, to galvanize communities toward a common social or political cause, and, as Chicana artists will co-opt her image as a vehicle to assert gender issues within the larger agenda, I will argue that the opposition to such efforts reveals a double-standard of allegiance in stark contrast to the goals of the Chicano movement. To understand how La Virgen has evolved outside of her intended religious context, her genesis must first be examined. Origin stories vary but, according to tradition, on Dec 9, 1531, Juan Diego first saw La Virgen on top of Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico City. She instructed him to have the Bishop build a church on the site. Little Juan Diego immediately found the Bishop and relayed the message, but was dismissed as a storyteller. Three days later, on Juan Diego’s walk to church, la Virgen again reappeared. This time, she told Juan Diego to go the hilltop and pick roses, pack them in his tilma, and take them to the bishop to prove he saw her and to convince the bishop to build a church there. When he presented them to the bishop as instructed, he dropped his cloak with the roses. What appeared in their place was the brightly painted image of the Lady. Once news spread of Juan Diego’s sightings of the Mother of God speaking to him in his native tongue, thousands traveled to Mexico City to see the legendary cape of the ‘brown‘ Virgin Mary. Some say the Virgin of Guadalupe represents early efforts at syncretism by the Catholic church in an era when indigenous religious practices were discouraged. Jeanette Rodriguez explores this theory in Our Lady of Guadalupe, beginning with an in depth analysis of the Aztec empire and its eventual conquest by the Spanish. Rodriguez argues that, through conquest and colonialism, Christian deities overpowered indigenous gods in terms of propagandistic exposure and eventually a dichotomy of virtues emerges. The monotheistic male god came to represent power, assertiveness, rationality and independence, attributes once associated with Aztec gods. Opposing characteristics like purity, virginity, fertility and maternal love were then attributed to female deity figures, like the Euro-Catholic Virgin Mary and Aztec goddess, Tonantzin. Concurrently, contends Rodriguez, the folkloric story of Juan Diego and La Virgen on Tepayac Hill emerges and the legend of Guadalupe is born. Eventually, this image evolves into the dominant national icon, symbolizing the new mestiza, who was born from both Spanish and indigenous blood. Jody Brant Smith agrees, in The Image of Guadalupe, that she appeared â€Å"miraculously on the cactus cloth tilma, or cape, of Juan Diego, an Aztec peasant, in 1531, a mere dozen years after Hernan Cortes conquered Mexico for the King of Spain. † This cape proved valuable to the Church and its goals of conversion. â€Å"In just seven years, from 1532 to 1538, eight million Indians were converted to Christianity. Whether one believes the Virgin de Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego on the hill or believe that Guadalupe was created to convert the Indians to the Catholic Church, the legend of Guadalupe as we know her today begins at this time. As a placebo for a changing guard, La Virgen de Guadalupe proved highly successful. The iconic image of La Virgen de Guadalupe remains static in both form and symbolism until the mid twentieth cen tury, when a new movement among Mexican-Americans emerges in California, dubbed the Chicano movement. As visual propaganda becomes a large part of the movement, a significant body of art with common themes and styles, known as Chicano art, follows. This shift in subject matter among Mexican-American artists toward a specific social and political agenda began earlier, as evidenced by the work of Rivera, Orozco, and Posada, but, it isn’t until the mid 1960’s that national or religious iconographic images are recycled to support a larger political or social agenda. Scholars cite the famous 1966 United Farm Workers protest, in defense of migrant farm worker’s rights, as the beginning of what is now known as the Chicano Art movement. Organizers for the protest communicated through graphic art forms, like newsletters, posters, and cartoons. Symbolism and iconography that drew upon cultural resources, like La Virgen de Guadalupe and an Aztec inspired thunderbird, connected visual communication to these agendas. Reclamation of traditional cultural and religious iconography for political purposes becomes a recurring theme among Mexican-American artists and the defining criteria for the classification of art as Chicano. While Chicano art differs from Mexican art in that Mexican and other Latin art is rooted in pre-Columbian traditions and folklore, Chicano art also acknowledges American education and experience as part of what shapes an artist and his message. On the heels of the Chicano movement, the Civil Rights movement, and public outrage over America’s participation in the Vietnam War, women’s issues also battle for attention on a national level. Feminism as a movement gains significant momentum in the 1960’s; within a decade, Chicana feminists begin to use Guadalupe in their artwork. As Rosie the Riveter forged a path for Anglo feminists, Guadalupe remains the most powerful vehicle for the Chicana agenda. Up until this point, the Virgin was most often appropriated for purely inspirational purposes, and artist’s interpretation of her image and intent remain congruous to her religious authority. Now, in light of new feminist theory, says Felipe Ehrenberg in Framing an Icon: Guadalupe and the Artist’s Vision,â€Å" Latina artists â€Å"seek to reconstruct the deity’s presence, and in doing so, manage to define her usefulness to their causes. † Ester Hernandez, a Chicana artist working early in the movement’s history, is one of the first to utilize the visual power of La Virgen for feminist purposes. Hernandez’s work, which has exhibited internationally, focuses on â€Å"the dignity, strength, experiences, and dreams of Latina women. † The etching, La Virgen de Guadalupe Defendiendo los Derechos de los Xicanos, (etching; 1974), does not explore issues of sexuality, but rather Hernandez takes the opportunity to make a social statement. The image portrays a woman in karate clothes, stepping out of the classic ring of sunrays, with one leg in the air in a classic Karate pose. Reinterpreted by Hernandez, La Virgen is now a symbol of emerging feminist ideas, and will set the path for similar explorations by other Chicana artists. Born in 1942, Yolanda Lopez is another Chicana artist who uses Guadalupe as a springboard to discuss a feminist agenda. Lopez portrays herself in the image of la virgen in Portrait of the Artist as the Virgin of Guadalupe (oil pastel on paper, 1978, 32â€Å"x24â€Å"). No longer a passive icon, Lopez utilizes Guadalupe to represent slowly shifting views about gender issues and sexuality in Chicano culture. Lopez situates herself in the position of the virgin, assuming the role. However, Lopez instead depicts herself athletic and strong, even assertive. She wears jogging shoes and a grin as she appears to sprint toward the viewer. Juan Diego, the putti-like boy that generally supports the virgin in traditional versions, instead lay underfoot. Still, characteristics that identify this portrayal as an interpretation of Guadalupe are unmistakable: the palette remains faithful to original portrayals, the iconic rays surround her, and the navy tilma billows behind Lopez as she moves. For early Chicana feminist artists, utilizing the iconic image of La Virgen de Guadalupe is critical to their agenda; in the tradition of the Chicano art movement, Guadalupe recalls nationalistic affiliations while including gender issues as part of the debate. However, secondary to political concerns of the Chicano movement as a whole, Chicana artists whose work serves to insert gender issues into the rubric of the Chicano movement are criticized within the community. Says Gaspar de Alba, â€Å"[a]ny divergence from that role, be it through a political engagement with the ideology of women’s liberation, as in the case of Chicana feminists [†¦] mmediately casts Chicanas who subscribe to either or both of these choices in a suspect light. † Further challenging the virgin ideal, new generations of women are reinterpreting her image from a feminist viewpoint to explore sexuality as it pertains to gender. Perhaps the most controversial example of such discourse involve s the work of Mexican-American artist, Alma Lopez. Lopez, a contemporary Chicana artist, explores her relationship with La Virgen de Guadalupe through mixed media piece titled Our Lady (digital print on canvas; 1999). She planned to show it at the Fullerton Museum Center as part of a larger exhibit, â€Å"The Virgin of Guadalupe: Interpreting Devotion. † The work depicts her partner, Raquel Salinas, posed and framed in the likeness of la Virgen de Guadalupe. Lopez choices, using her lover as subject and depicting her clothed only in bunches of roses worn like a bikini, reflect the difficulties experienced by Lopez and other lesbian women in a deeply Catholic culture. Lopez explores personal contradictions between her religious piety and her own sexuality as a lesbian woman of Mexican-American descent. She saw the image of Guadalupe as one that belonged to her, to interpret as she saw fit. I am relating her to the women in my life, my mom, my grandma, my aunt. They had to be strong to survive, like Christs mother. The piece caused a controversy among Mexican-American citizens in the community, and many citizens worked tirelessly to block the work from public view. Gustavo Arellano covers this story for OC Weekly in an article titled, â€Å"Nuestra Senora de Censorship: Who Says the Virgin Can’t be Sexy? † which discusses the controversy surrounding the exhibit. Arellano cites a letter written by Ernesto Cienfuegos, editor of La Voz de Aztlan, a website devoted to contemporary Chicano/a issues. In the letter, Cienfuegos expresses his outrage (and homophobic sexism) with Lopez and her work. â€Å"Firstly, the person†¦representing the ‘Mother of Jesus’ is nothing less than Raquel Salinas, the lesbian lover of the so called artist Alma Lopez. Raquel Sa linas calls herself ‘La Chuparosa’ which Alma Lopez often depicts on her abominable images. † He goes on to assert that such artwork is being â€Å"†¦promoted by many USA based pornographers† and dismisses the museums director’s decision to feature the piece as â€Å"†¦merely ignorant of the facts and not involved in an anti-Mexican effort to destroy our most revered spiritual beliefs and cultural values. † Lopez defends her position, citing her unique perspective as a Chicana artist, and says of the backlash, â€Å"I admit, I was surprised by the violent reaction to Our Lady because I am a community artist born in Mexico and raised in California with the Virgin as a constant in my home and my community. I am know that there is nothing wrong with this image which was inspired by the experiences of many Chicanas and their complex relationship to La Virgen de Guadalupe. I am not the first Chicana to reinterpret the image with a feminist perspective, and Im positive I wont be the last. Cienfuegos‘ letter touches upon a larger, more serious concern for Chicana artists, such as Lopez, who utilize Guadalupe in their art. Such evident venom and blanket disapproval is consistent with aggression received by many homosexual activists, including that of the Mexican-American woman, for whom both gender, religion, and race are inextricably linked. Gaspar de Alba offers insight into why Chicana artists like Lopez have met with so much opposition, even within her own community. Viewed as ‘wannabe’ white women, Chicana feminists are still accused in some inner circles of betraying the Chicano revolution and subscribing to a divisive politics that breaks up the ‘familia’ -both symbolically, by criticizing the ‘brothers’ and ‘jefes’ of the movement and calling them on their sexism and heterosexism, and literally, by not using their sexuality in the service of breeding new revolutionaries for La Causa[. Sandra Cisneros’ essay, â€Å"Guadalupe as a Sex Goddess,† offers an alternative contemporary perspective on the implied symbolism of the Virgin of Guadalupe through her personal experiences growing up in a Mexican-American household. Within this framework, she reconciles her cultural roots with her emerging sexual curiosity. She writes that she looked for signs of Gua dalupe as a ‘whole woman. ’ She wanted to look â€Å"underneath her dress† to see if she was a real woman. † Cisneros’ discussion about â€Å"the double chastity belt of ignorance and erguenza† also touches on the double standard that exists in Mexican-American culture as it relates to La Virgen. â€Å"Did boys have to aspire to be Jesus? I never saw any evidence of it. † These types of double standards perpetuate la Virgen as the symbol for a virgin/whore dichotomy deeply rooted in Mexican-American culture. As Emma Perez writes in Sexuality and Discourse, â€Å"Consciousness is born out of one’s intimate awareness of one’s oppression. † By claiming sitio y lengua, or a place and a voice, she states Chicanas and other women of color can form a new discourse on issues of feminism and sexuality. Claiming sitio y lengua, as argued by Perez, also includes the freedom to adopt images and icons like La Virgen. For centuries, la Virgen de Guadalupe has served as the single strongest symbol of virginity in the Americas. New generations of Chicana artists, such as Isis Rodriguez, San Francisco based cartoonist, adopt Guadalupe as an image, manipulating or controlling her attributes, claiming a personal, as opposed to cultural relationship, with la Virgen. In a discussion with Benjamin Francisco Hernandez for Low Rider Arte Magazine, Rodriguez says of this piece, â€Å"Whenever I have her in my artwork it’s not so much disrespectful as it is that she carries certain virtues that we assign her. She is a protectress [sic] or a caregiver. I put her in those roles. † Others, like Sandra Cisneros and Lopez, also acknowledge personal connections with Guadalupe, yet question what is known, and not known, about the Americas’ most revered female figure. As Cisneros notes in â€Å"Guadalupe is a Sex Goddess,† â€Å"When I see La Virgen de Guadalupe I want to lift her dress as I did my dolls and look to see if she comes with chones, and does her panocha look like mine, and does she have dark nipples too? † Like the term Chicana, the symbolic meaning of the Virgin of Guadalupe is always growing, evolving, and changing. As she was born out of syncretism, it is befitting her history to continually redefine her in contemporary terms, by contemporary participants of society. Alma Lopez and Sandra Cisneros have experienced firsthand the backlash from the Mexican-American community and society at large. It is more difficult to examine why something makes society uncomfortable than to ignore or destroy it. It is the very awkwardness, tension and insecurity of the experience itself that serves to formulate new and relevant questions about solidarity, femininity, and sexuality within the Chicano art. The Evolution of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Chicano Art free essay sample A beautiful dark-skinned brunette stands before you. PepsiCo and Coca-Colas Essay Example

PepsiCo and Coca PepsiCo and Coca-Colas Paper PepsiCo and Coca-Colas Paper Essay Topic: Marketing The purpose of this report is to analyze and learn from PepsiCo and Coca-Colas entry into the Indian market. It involves many international marketing aspects, including the impacts of Indias political environment on both companies success causing them to enter at different times result in different effects, to respond in many ways to the enormity of India, discuss their glocalization strategies and Coca-Colas mistakes in India. Political environment in India For the government of India fulfilled some austere trade policies, rules and regulations before the year 1990, PepsiCo and Coca-Colas entry into the Indian market was its political environment as a result of major obstacle. Indian government was only interested in the high-tech sectors for foreign investment. It was almost entirely prohibited to invest customer goods sectors. That was Principle of Indigenous Availability, which policy banning imports being sold in India. Due to this political environment, Coca-Cola had withdrawn from the Indian market in 1977. The new government of India was founded in June 1991. In order to expand liberalization of the Indian economy, new government introduced some new industrial policies, such as bureaucracy and regulation to foreign direct investment. These policies intended to dismantle complicated trade rules and regulations, foreign investment increased dramatically, beneficiary industries included processed foods, software, engineering plastics, electronic equipment, power generation and petroleum generation. Pepsi and Coca-Cola were required many India laws, for example, foreign businesses were prohibited use of foreign brand names on products selling within the Indian market. Therefore, Pepsi became Lehar Pepsi, Coco-Cola became Coca-Cola India. Also, designed as obstacles to impede foreign business, for example, sales of soft drink concentrate to local bottlers could not exceed 25 per cent of total sales for the new venture. Because of the lack of consistency in the legal environment, Coco-Cola agreed to sell off 49% of its stocks to Indian investors as a condition of entering in order to buy out Indian bottlers in 2002. It was most controversial agreement. Because of this time limit had been extended once already, Coca-Cola asked for a second extension that would delay it until 2007 was refused. Coco-Cola though by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board wanted to block the votes of the Indian shareholders who would control 49% of Coca-Cola. But all previous lobbying became useless. The government of India lacked solid institutions leading to corruption. In contrast to Coca-Cola, Pepsi had entered India in a different year under a different set of rules. The above of these effects could not be anticipated prior to Indian market entry. The political environment was inconsistent with some policies and laws. Indias emerging market is a lacking of harmony. It mixed with discordant tones. The interest clashed with Indian government. These interests often were conflict with some political issues. These policies were often related to economic, environment and social problems. Resolving these problems was in the interests of whom including a large number of consumers, environmentalists and lobbies. Accordingly, foreign companies wanted to enter Indian market successfully that usually required carefully. It must be consider all the stringent rules and local policies, for instance equity stakes under the new rules from 40 per cent to 51 per cent. Local have a free media and democratic political system. These will be beneficial to support or protest behavior for many long-established international companies. For Coco-Cola, it could only agree to start new bottling plants instead of buying out Parle, and thus had to agree to sell 49% of equity. Pepsi was not held to a disinvestment rule because it had opted to set up several bottling units. Timing of entry into the Indian market Earlier market entry PepsiCo lodged a joint venture application to enter India in July 1986. It had selected two local partners, Voltas and Punjab Agro. This application was approved under the name Pepsi Foods Ltd by the government of Rajiv Gandhi September 1988. In 1986, following Coca-Colas departure, Parle became the market leader in India. The local main competitors were only Parle and Pure. In addition to the demand for carbonated drink in Indian was very low, in 1989, the average Indian was buying only three bottles a year. Advantages Due to lacking of Indias competitiveness in soft drinks industry, PepsiCos entry would enhance competitive advantage and promote the development of soft drinks in Indian market. It could be helpful to find more opportunities for PepsiCo. Many opportunities for the Indian market contributed to the development of enterprise. Pepsi had learnt from the experiences of Coca-Cola. Pepsi seized the Indian market as soon as possible. Through the adoption of measures, the use of joint venture with local groups to lobby the Indian government. Thus PepsiCo would be easier to build up their reputation and loyalty to associate with establishing priorities. In possession of good honor and admire, the degree of brand popularity was greater of the other competitors. The continuous development of PepsiCo was able to gain a foothold in the market before Coco-Cola entered the market. Pepsi gained 26% market share by 1993. Disadvantages The development of PepsiCo became more slowly due to infrastructure was not enough imperfections in early India. The crumbling infrastructure also improved the investment risks and costs at that time. The cost of exploration greatly increased influenced by Indias political environment. For example, Pepsi was forced to change their name to Lehar Pepsi. Also, Indian government limited their drink sales to less than 25% of total sales. This policy would help PepsiCo to struggle to fight off local competitions. Later marketing entry Coca-Cola Corporation had been present in the Indian market from 1958 until its withdrawal in 1977. Due to the government of India require Coca-Cola hand over its secret formula for the syrup so that it chose to leave India rather than cut its equity stake to 40 per cent. At that time there were many opportunities for the Indian market. The Coca-Cola inevitably became the market leader. But Coca-Cola was only a distant memory to most Indians. In spite of that Coca-Cola succeeded creating a 100%-owned soft drinks company (Coca-Cola India) in 1993 and then ultimately aligning with the Indian market leader (Parle) in June 1993. Advantages At this time the Indian market has already a relatively sound infrastructure so that Coca-Colas investment risk reduced. In July 1993, Coca-Cola was able to buy 4 bottling plants from industry leader Parle. Coca-Cola also bought Parles leading brands including Thums UP, Limca, Citra, Gold Spot and Mazza. Later Coca-Cola again set up 2 new ventures with Parle to bottle and market products. By 2002, Coca-Cola owned 30 bottling plants, 10 franchisees and held a 56 per cent market share of the national soft drink market in India. The Coca-Cola once again was market leader. Disadvantages The capacity of the soft drink market in India was becoming smaller increasingly. Coca-Cola the twice to return to the Indian market in 1993, but faced Indian beverage market is old rival PepsiCo. In May 1990, the government of India has also been turned down Coca-Cola just as Pepsi was approved. Hence, Coca-Cola had difficultly to establish market share with PepsiCo there. Obstruction by the policy, Coca-Cola was not allowed to buy back 49% of equity. So it did not relate very well to the government of India. Furthermore, Coca-Cola had reported losses in India since its return there in 1993. Responses to the sheer scale of operations in India Pepsi and coca-cola responded in many ways to the enormity of India in terms of population and geography. The following is about the sheer scale of operations ways. Product policies In order to cater to Indian consumer tastes, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola launched different products. Entering with products closed to those already available in India, such as colas, fruit drinks and carbonated waters. They used a variety of tastes and created multi-brand strategy. In order to encourage growth in demand for bottled beverages in the Indian market, introducing new products such as bottled ware (Coca-Colas brand is Kinley and Pepsi Foods brand is Aquafina). They launched their own brand in a new category, such as clear lime category (Coke-Sprite, Pepsi-7UP). Coco-Cola merged with Parle and two new ventures set up to bottling plants and both companies products. Promotional activities Both PepsiCo and Coca-Cola used advertising and promotional strategy in India. During the cultural festival of Navrartri, PepsiCo sponsored Navrartri celebration in annual. Some promotion ways, every refill of a case of Pepsi gave away one kilo of Basmati rice or a packet of Kit-Kat and Polos candy free. Coco-Cola offered free passes, coke giveaways as well as vacations to Goa. They used seasonal sales promotions and the success of their seasonal advertising campaigns through researching marketing in different campaigns and areas of India. The successful promotions included Pepsis sponsorship of cricket and football from the world cup. Coca-Colas lifestyle advertising as a method of building brand loyalty among its target market: India A appealed to young urbanites; India B appealed to rural areas. Coca-Cola used of local characteristics and to introduce new Mini size to launch the affordability plank campaign. Pricing policies Coco-cola reduced prices by 15%-25% to encourage consumption to try to compete with Pepsi and gain market share in 2003. Through the introduction of a mini size by Coca-Cola increased total volume of sales. Pepsi was forced to match these price reductions. It introduced returnable glass bottles for customers to recoup costs. Pepsi started out with an aggressive pricing policy to try to get immediate market share from Indian competitors Distribution arrangements The demand grew with the increase of the value of regions and customers, along with new products were added. Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo were able to gain market share. Coca-Colas production plants and bottling centers placed in large cities all around India, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat. PepsiCos marketing and distribution were focused in the north and west around the major cities of Delhi and Mumbai. Coca-Cola and Pepsis Glocalization Glocalization refer to globalization and localization. Make use of the product or service global meet consumer in a local market, in order to emphasize that the globalization of product or service is more likely to succeed if they adapted specifically to each locality or culture. PepsiCo and Coca-Cola both companies have successfully implemented glocalization. Pepsis Glocalization PepsiCo lodged a joint venture application to enter India with two local partners, Voltas and Punjab Agro, and forming Pepsi Foods Ltd in 1988. In 1990, Pepsi Food products were promoted under the name Lehar Pepsi to conform with foreign collaboration rules. After that Pepsi launched its Lehar 7UP in the clear lemon category in keeping with local tastes. PepsiCo was also actively integrated into the Indian cultural festival. Navrartri is a traditional festival held in the town of Gujarat which lasts for nine days. During the cultural festival of Navrartri, PepsiCo used advertising to promote their products. PepsiCos most effective glocalization strategy had been sponsoring world famous Indian sports events, such as cricket and football. Coco-Colas Golcalization By 1993, Coca-Cola formed alliance with the market leader Parle made four major cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat) in bottling plants and five major leading brands. During the culture festival of Navrartri, Coco-Colas free passes issued to the celebration in each of Thums Up bottles. Also offered special promotions where people could win free vacations to Goa. Coco-Cola also hired several famous Bollywood actors to publicize their products. Those commercials were impressive. Coca-Cola Indias mistakes Coca-Cola entered Indian market at the wrong time. Due to entering at that time, Coca-Cola must agree to abide by all the Foreign Investment Laws and the political environment in India, such as local stringent conditions, foreign collaboration rules, prohibited use of foreign brand names and disinvestment clause and so on. In January 2002, Coco-cola India wanted to expand investment, but the Indian government provides that the company must be the original 100% owned holding company (HCCHPL), of which 49% of equity sold to the local investment within two years as a condition. Since then Coco-Cola had asked for extensions twice, Indian government granted the first extension, but denied the second. Coco-Cola India tried to deny voting rights to its new Indian shareholders. But FIPB denies this again. Coca-Cola India repeatedly required to reduce disinvestment rule requirements in order to allow Indians into the industry, and expectations delist their shares altogether, effectively making their Indian operations wholly owned subsidiaries. Coco-Cola should not have tried to weasel their way out of promises. These mistakes hurt Coca-Colas image and reputation as an International company. Coca-Cola should set the pace for the entire multinational company. Coco-cola should have been more careful to wait patiently when it entered the Indian market and Coca-Cola was a promising. Conclusion In conclusion, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola had succeeded to enter Indian market and to implement glocalization to adapt the local culture. Through to research the market and trends prior to entering the Indian market, they had been fully aware of the history, geography, political, and legal considerations. Some key lessons can use the experience of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo for reference. It is worthy of learning from some companies as it contemplates entry into other big emerging markets. These are many active approaches can take to help ensure success in the foreign market.
